STEELS Standards

  1. Academic Achievement = STEELS-aligned, Standards-based lessons

    • What are STEELS Standards?  STEELS standards are the new PA Science standards (Science, Technology, Engineering, Environmental Literacy & Sustainability)

    • Our school day lessons are aligned to PA’s new Environmental Literacy & Sustainability standards

    • All our school day lessons support cross-curricular PA State Standards in Math, Literacy and Social Studies

    • Our garden lessons are hands-on, phenomena-based, accessible and equitable

    • Our trained Garden Educators lead students in 40-minute lessons outside in their school garden

    • Want to teach Plant Science using all 5 senses? Students use all their senses when growing, harvesting, preparing and tasting their garden vegetables

    • Want to give your students practice conserving natural resources? This occurs every day in the garden as students water their plants using captured rainwater

    • Want to learn together how other cultures grow and prepare food…that’s where the “Edible” in The Edible Classroom shines

  2. Healthy Lifestyles =  veggie tastings, whole body wellness, exploration, discovery

    • We see on a daily basis that students are more inclined to try a vegetable if they’ve been part of the process from seed to table

    • “I don’t like broccoli. But I like this broccoli!!” said a student when he harvested his first head of broccoli in his school garden.

    • The School Garden is a Brain Break, a place for students to reset before heading back to the classroom

    • Students harvest hundreds of pounds of produce and taste straight from their school garden

    • Wish your school was within walking distance of an Educational field trip? The school gardens that we establish together with our partner schools are living, breathing, thriving places for teachers to take their students anytime during the school day.

  3. Environmental Stewardship = healthy soil, compost, regenerative practices, rainwater catchment, organic, Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

  • An interactive space for students to connect with the earth and each other
